X-Men: Days of Future Past Movie Review

Standard

I admit, I was excited for X-Men: Days of Future Past but at the same time part of me was a bit nervous. I’ve been a fan of the movies since X-Men (2000) until it began to go down hill with X2 (2003) and then we were left with X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)…I won’t even go there since we all know the disappointment that came with that movie (or at least I hope you were disappointed because that movie…no, I refuse to get off topic with my anger about The Last Stand!)

Eventually in 2009 we were given X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was a pretty decent movie although not my favorite. Next up was X-Men: First Class (2011) and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Getting to see the younger versions of the characters was interesting and the cast was filled with some of my personal favorite actors. Then in 2013 we received The Wolverine. I was definitely nervous about it. It was either going to be well done or cringe-worthy no matter how awesome Hugh Jackman is as Logan/Wolverine. I was nervous for nothing because I really enjoyed The Wolverine and the ending scene of course set up the next movie and the reason I’m currently rambling…X-Men: Days of Future Past.

When I saw the scene in The Wolverine when Logan is in the airport and runs into Charles/Professor X and Magneto, my first question was: ‘How is Professor X alive? Didn’t he burst into a million pieces and disappear in The Last Stand?’ So I figured they’d end up answering that dilemma in Days of Future Past. That NEVER happened or at least I never picked up on it! (If they did PLEASE leave me a comment and explain because that seemed like a plot hole to me and I would love an answer to calm my comic book nerd heart)

Honestly, aside from that (possible? probably definite?) plot hole regarding Charles/Professor X, the movie was definitely awesome. Basically to sum it up quickly in case you don’t know, the movie deals with the X-Men fighting off the Sentinels (robots created to hunt mutants and the humans willing to help them) but when they realize the robots can take on the powers of the mutants (thanks to Mystique’s DNA) and they cannot beat them, time travel is their only solution. Kitty Pryde uses her powers (which I’d like to know where her time travel powers came from? Any takers?) to send Logan’s consciousness into his past in order for him to change the past and prevent the Sentinels from being created, therefore, giving them all a better and safer future. Logan is the only one capable of possibly surviving the process due to his healing abilities. Charles explains what Logan must do and we then travel back in time and all hell breaks loose as in every superhero movie.

We see what has become of young Charles and his school (both are in horrible shape…Charles taking Hank’s serum in order to walk causing his powers to fade away and the school is completely run down and no longer has students mostly due to the war and the draft). We learn about the rest of the mutants as the movie progresses as well (Mystique off on her own, Magneto locked up underneath the Pentagon, Havok fighting in the war, etc.etc. you get my point). We also meet Quicksilver…he was a fun character, mainly as some comedic relief, but if you compare what Evan Peter’s Quicksilver looks like compared to Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver in the upcoming The Avengers: Age of Ultron, well, to put it bluntly X-Men’s version of Quicksilver looks like a Spy Kid. (I might get flak for that comparison)

Like I said, it proved to be a pretty awesome movie and the ending will make many X-Men fans very happy. I may or may not have excitedly grinned at the screen and gasped when I saw that Scott/Cyclops was alive! Jean was also back to her normal mutant self and not the Phoenix. She was also clearly still with Scott from his reaction to Logan reaching out to touch her face (but in all honesty, I’d prefer Logan with someone else since I was never a fan of Logan and Jean…some may disagree with me, that’s just my opinion).

And the scene after the credits set up the next movie, X-Men: Apocalypse hitting theaters in 2016 (P.S. please try not to ever be those moviegoers that leave Marvel movies before the end of the credits…I admit, I shake my head at those obvious Marvel amateurs. Just friendly advice, you paid for it, stick around til the very end!) The short scene was ominous and revealed someone in the desert standing in front of the Egyptian pyramids being built quite quickly. The camera pans around to reveal said someone is definitely not human and will undoubtedly be the next big bad for the sequel. If you don’t know much about the character Apocalypse (super old, super terrifying, craves world domination, won’t stand for weaker beings no matter if they’re mutant or not), check out Darren Franich’s Entertainment Weekly article about X-Men: Days of Future Past‘s ending! Read it from start to finish if you can because it’s well written and definitely hits a lot of key points fellow fans will enjoy!

In the end, I should definitely stop rambling now. Go see X-Men: Days of Future Past because despite what I tell you, you should make your own assumptions. Never listen to critics or friends or family until you see it for yourself! Trust me, don’t miss out on a movie because one or two people you know didn’t like it.

Enjoy the X-Men awesomeness and if you’ve seen it leave your comments below! Until next time, fellow entertainment junkies 🙂

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy New Official Trailer

Video

I am a proud Marvel comic book nerd and can never get enough of Marvel’s movies but I have to admit I didn’t know much about Guardians of the Galaxy.
Now save your unnecessary comments about how that may make me a “bad fan” or I’m somehow not dedicated enough or the typical go-to response “I don’t know anything about comics because I’m a girl.” (Never jump to conclusions about female comic book fans…yes, some don’t know everything but others do know their stuff and they rock!)
Anyway, I did my research, learned as much as I could about this incredibly diverse team of heroes and I’m excited to see how the movie comes together in August. Especially after watching the latest trailer (located above for your viewing pleasure), the cast seems pretty awesome and honestly not what I expected but Marvel Studios has known what it’s been doing since Iron Man in 2008 so I never hesitate to put my confidence in their movies.
We also have another Chris to add to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! We already have Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and now we have the pleasure of welcoming Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord. And props to Pratt for bulking up and getting into amazing shape for the role!
The rest of the cast includes other talented names like Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan (cannot wait to see her play a villain!), Benicio Del Toro and Glenn Close…to name more than a few (or more than half the cast).
Guardians of the Galaxy will sadly be the last Marvel Studios movie of the summer and of 2014. Fingers crossed GOTG can rock the box office almost as much as Captain America: The Winter Soldier (I say almost since CA:TWS was phenomenal and broke the opening weekend box office record for April). But hey, GOTG may make some of its own records!
So after GOTG hits theaters on August 1, 2014, the next Marvel Studios movie won’t be here until May 1, 2015 when we FINALLY get The Avengers: Age of Ultron! Let’s just say I’ve been ready for the next Avengers movie since the credits rolled for The Avengers in 2012. Here’s to us waiting impatiently in anticipation after August.
As always, if you want to ramble about Guardians of the Galaxy or anything Marvel, just drop me a comment and let’s talk! 🙂
Until next time, fellow entertainment junkies!

Supernatural Season 9 Finale (Beware of Spoilers!)

Standard

So what better way to start my new blog than with an after-Supernatural-season-finale post?

If you’re like most of us fans in the SPN Family then you know how much emotional torture each season finale brings to our Winchester-loving hearts. If not just scroll through Twitter or Tumblr and, trust me, you’ll see the aftermath. Without a doubt, it’s never particularly pretty.

There is usually incoherent rambling (which usually makes sense, at least if you can relate and therefore decipher what they’re trying to say) and there are endless posts/tweets about things others might have missed or theories about what’s to come next season. Basically it’s a jumble of pure insanity and an explosion of emotions, in the best way possible, because us Supernatural fans are dedicated and I absolutely love it!

The Season 9 finale, “Do You Believe in Miracles,” was amazing! The writers, cast and crew really outdid themselves and definitely gave us a season finale to remember.

Let’s just jump straight to the biggest part of the finale…Dean. Scary Mark of Cain Dean, to which I applaud Jensen Ackles for bringing out a side of Dean that truly creeped me out and had me petrified about what that Mark was going to do to him. (Jensen, you get all of the awards for that endless talent you grace us with each week) Sorry, fangirl rambling!

Anyway, as soon as Dean started showing that disturbing desire and need for the First Blade earlier this season, possible scenarios immediately began playing out in my mind. (Plus, my inner writer couldn’t help but brainstorm) I warned you in the title but I’ll warn you again…spoilers ahead!

I called it when I said that Dean would end up becoming a demon. That didn’t stop me from audibly gasping, continuing to bawl my eyes out (since I was already crying due to the infuriating Metatron stabbing Dean multiple times and heart-wrenching brotherly moments) and having my heart burst into a billion little pieces.

Can we all agree seeing Dean lying there motionless on the bed and then suddenly opening his eyes to reveal purely black demon eyes was one of the biggest shocks we’ve been dealt these past nine seasons? Even if you expected it, it was still insane to see play out before you.

After slowly slipping out of shock, (I’m still in shock, who am I trying to kid?), one of my first thoughts was Season 3’s “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” That haunting quote said by Evil!Dean… “You can’t escape me, Dean. You’re gonna die. And this. This is what you’re going to become!”

Just seeing Dean in that single scene with demon eyes was something we never thought would really happen. Sure, Sam and Dean have dealt with possession (remember when Sam was possessed by Meg? Or as Dean put it, “Dude, you…you like full on had a girl inside you for like a whole week.”) But we never thought Dean turning into a full-on demon could actually come true.

So now we have Demon!Dean. It’s happened and unfortunately we have to wait all the way until the fall to see how they’re going to handle all of this. And, not to toy with your emotions, we didn’t even get to see Sam’s reaction to Demon!Dean. Sam still believes his brother is dead and was summoning Crowley to undoubtedly come up with some sort of deal.

Speaking of, praise the Supernatural gods that the brothers finally had their moment (of course, while Dean was half dead). Either way, I know the codependent relationship Sam and Dean have gets them in trouble sometimes, I’m just happy Sam came to the realization that he will ALWAYS have Dean’s back and do whatever he can to protect/save him like Dean will ALWAYS do for him. (Who knows how that will go now that Dean’s dark side…oh man, I keep stomping on the pieces of my own heart!)

In the end, 1.) I knew Demon!Dean was upon us, 2.) Thank you Supernatural writers for giving us a much-needed yet sad brotherly moment, 3.) I stupidly neglected Castiel in this post but fear not, I do adore our angel and was so proud when he used Metatron’s angel radio against him. I also cried some more at Castiel’s reaction to hearing that Dean was dead, and 4.) I love Crowley, despite him being a demon, but I am royally pissed he thought it was perfectly fine to leave out the major part about what the Mark of Cain/First Blade might end up doing to Dean AKA turning him into a demon! Not cool, Crowley, not cool at all. You’re going to have a pissed off Moose to deal with!

If you actually took the time to read this entire rambling post then don’t hesitate to leave me a comment and your thoughts! I’ll be sure to make a post responding to your reactions!

Until next time, my fellow entertainment junkies! 🙂

P.S. Expect more Supernatural-related posts since I’m sure I’ll come across something I forgot or just other parts of the finale I want to ramble more about.
